Greetings, Decibel readers!
We have a real mix of sounds for you today. Sure, there’s some death metal and black metal like always, but I couldn’t deny BTBAM a slot in this week’s roundup. And there’s a hardcore entry at the bottom as well. You got some options for your weekend escapism.
Run along now.

Between the Buried and Me – The Blue Nowhere
Between the Buried and Me is a band for explorers. On The Blue Nowhere, the band continues the thread they started in the early years and weaves it in all directions. There’s a distinct industrial rock/metal vibe on certain songs, especially with the settings on Tommy’s vocals. But as always, there’s the zany, outlandish sections that play like an epic rock opera. It’s the mix of the familiar unexpected we’ve come to rely on from these modern prog-metal heroes. Oh, and there’s lots of moments where the band’s metalcore teeth come out, recalling Alaska and the first album. That always makes me happy.

Der Weg einer Freiheit – Innern
The latest from the introspective and contemplative storm of sound known as Der Weg einer Freiheit. This is the band’s followup to 2021’s Noktvrn. Innernis a flowing torrent of black metal energy, but one that’s balanced in such a way you can hear everything clearly. The drums are dialed in particularly well here, a blessing as some albums like this are chore to listen to when the kick-drum is too loud. Oh, and lots and lots of riffs too!

Heruvim – Mercator
Pure, straightforward, no-nonsense death metal! These Ukies know how to deliver the punishment our souls crave, with mean guitars, crushing drums and bass, and ruthless vocals. It’s all the more impressive when part of the band still resides in Odesa, not far from the southern front of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Deadly defiance in the face of actual death. Support!

Infernal Thorns – Christus Venari
Extra-brutal blasphemy from Chile’s Infernal Thorns. Essential listening if you love Angelcorpse, Incantation, Formulas-era Morbid Angel, Azarath, and Krisiun. You get the picture.

Restraining Order – Future Fortune
And now for something completely different. I’m an easy sell for anything like this — basically a modernized, tricked out version of Negative Approach and Black Flag mixed with Boston hardcore-vibes and 70’s hard rock guitar leads. Nostalgic enough to hit the right notes, but fresh enough to make them feel new again.
