Blast Worship: Nasum

Where they from?
Sweden. In Week 1 I went 1-2 with my NFL picks and I did the same with my Week 2 picks. Judging by that logic, one out of three of these picks should pull through! I like the Colts giving three points on the road against Tennessee, Miami getting 12.5 on the road in Buffalo and Detroit getting six on the road in Baltimore. Season total: 2-4

Why the hype?
Normally I like to reserve this space for up-and-coming bands but when one of the most legendary bands in the history of grindcore announces a new-ish album, you can’t help but cover it. Nasum occupy the tier of grind that’s only below Napalm Death in terms of sheer importance and influence, their impact on the direction and proliferation of grindcore cannot be overstated enough. Though their career was tragically cut short by the passing of frontman Mieszko Talarczyk in the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, their legacy has only grown in the 21 years since. To put it rather bluntly, no one before or since quite grinded as ferociously and creatively as Nasum.

Latest Release?
Inhaled/Exhaled/Revived out in October on Relapse. It’s difficult to pick one album as the definitive Nasum album but 1998’s classic Inhale/Exhale probably comes the closest. It’s 38 songs serve as a sort of grindcore olympics of hall-of-fame grooves, melodies and just general creativity that essentially put most other grind albums to shame. Inhaled/Exhaled/Revived offers the entire original album remastered and offers a bevy of unreleased and remixed treasures that are sure to make every grindcore diehard rather ecstatic. For my money there have been few listening experiences this year that can top hearing ‘No Sign of Improvement’ with remastered production. An all time masterpiece is reborn.
