Song Review: The KingDom – Last Flower

Last year, Kingdom added a “The,” capitalized their “D” and released one mini album before taking a lengthy hiatus. It all seems like much ado about nothing, and the title of special single Last Flower (화월가) makes me a bit concerned for their future. Still, it’s nice to see them revert back to the historical cosplay that first made them an interesting group.

Back in that era, I often commented how I loved their concept and vision but the music itself left me cold. We’re back in that realm with Last Flower. Its traditional instrumentation is a treat and the extended vocal lines add a palpable sense of drama, but strip away the arrangement and you’re left with a pretty unmemorable song. The chorus has satisfying heft that grows stronger as Last Flower blooms and finally crests in a percussice climax. However, it’s all a lot easier to appreciate that fully love as a pop song. It feels much more like a stage you’d see at a Korean cultural festival.
