Full EP Stream: Wild Beyond – “Black Sites in Lower Chambers”

Black metal trio Wild Beyond made themselves as a band to watch on their self-titled debut album, showcasing a style that fell somewhere between the first and second waves of the genre paired with a sense of melodic thrashiness. Featuring members of Daeva, Drones for Queens and Morgul Blade, Wild Beyond continue to seek their signature sound on Black Sites in Lower Chambers, their new EP out later this month via Fiadh Productions.

Black Sites in Lower Chambers sets the mood with an introductory track played on vintage ’90s keyboards before jumping straight into the meat of the release. Over the course of four tracks, Wild Beyond trade off between atmospheric moodiness, thrashy rippers and melodic highs. According to the band, Black Sites was “recorded in abyssal basements and smoky rehearsal rooms in order to capture the intensity of the band’s live performance,” which lends the album a more intimate (but not raw) feeling. The presence of keys throughout the album enhances the dreamy quality, putting a layer of texture behind the aggressive music.

In true EP fashion, Wild Beyond conclude with a cover of Dimmu Borgir’s “Spellbound (By The Devil),” a classic cut from the legendary band’s second album.
