It may be bad practice to judge a book by its cover, but there’s no denying that a memorable album cover may be just the thing to win over a pair of skeptical ears. In the case of Paul Romano, the Philly-based visual artist whose talents have assisted the likes of the Red Chord, Hate Eternal, Withered and many more, his body of work has been a gateway into the underground music scene for decades. Likely no band is as connected to Romano’s art than Atlanta superstars Mastodon, of which over half of their full lengths—Remission, Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye and Hushed and Grim—feature his now iconic paintings.
This weekend, for the first time ever, the artist is displaying the complete 9’ x 9’ paintings used in 2021’s Hushed and Grim for free to the public. Hosted at Arch Enemy Arts (109 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA) and presented by The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, Romano and his better half/acclaimed sculptor Darla Jackson will be showcasing their art as part of the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (POST) from noon to 6 pm this Saturday and Sunday, October 11 and 12. Both artists will be on site both days and exclusive items, including prints of the Hushed and Grim artwork, will be available for purchase. And if the Mastodon superfans needed any further incentive, the equally impressive painting for 2004’s genre-defining Leviathan will also be on display at the gallery.
The complete Hushed and Grim painted works.
This event will only be open to the public this weekend, so if you happen to be in the area, don’t miss your chance to experience a crucial chapter in the book of metal history. We promise the cover is very nice.
