Revealed earlier this year, Kenny Sun and Devolver Digital’s brick-breaking, ball-fusing, base-building (and alliterate!) BALL X PIT is here to cause mass destruction.
See whether players should check out its balls-to-the-wall action with our review.
BALL X PIT Review
Kicking off with the fall of Ballbylon (we love a good dad joke), things kick off in BALL X PIT with it sinking into the earth.
After the aftermath, players are left with a small hamlet to build up and restore. Before doing so, one must venture forth into THE PIT (all caps).
When Ballbylon fell, it made a giant hole filled with monsters ready to kill. The deeper one goes, the harder it gets. However, one’s allies are waiting for the player to come and rescue them.
BALL X PIT’s game manages to be both very easy, yet still very challenging.
All one needs to do in BALL X PIT is move and aim – that’s it.
Depending on the character chosen, players will start with a ball, followed by baby balls that automatically launch as you play.
While seemingly easy enough on paper, those looking to get to BALL X PIT’s later stages will need some strategy.
We tried two different methods in BALL X PIT…
The first was to get point-blank, catch the balls as they bounce, and relaunch them.
Alternatively, we also set out to abuse the back line. On that note, those that bounce the ball into that area can keep it bouncing as it dishes out damage to spawning enemies.
That being said, this BALL X PIT strategy works great until the front line is on top…and one has no balls left to throw.
One wrong move in BALL X PIT, and one of its bosses will kill you quickly.
Each stage in BALL X PIT functions similarly – players will work through enemies as they approach a mini boss.
Killing said mini boss, players will then get to a second mini boss.
However, these dudes are chumps compared to BALL X PIT’s end level boss. These threats possess different skills, constantly move around, and can even get behind the player and attack when one is off guard.
Each of BALL X PIT’s end-level bosses has us fighting them multiple times to figure out the best way to vanquish them.
Now let’s talk about those balls….
BALL X PIT features around roughly 20-30 to choose from by its end game – and that’s not including its 30 or so passive buffs.
As players progress in each BALL X PIT run, they’ll be able to pick a new ball or buff. That being said, one can only hold four of each until late game.
Here’s the kicker – BALL X PIT lets players combine certain balls into more powerful balls. Once one combines two of them, they’ll have an extra slot to fill with a new type of ball.
Some later combos in BALL X PIT not only make one feel powerful, but they also look cool as hell.
Keeping the Radiation Beam and The Nuke in rotation was a must for us. Said Radiation Beam hits an enemy, followed by a hit to the entire line – this makes for a great light show!
As for BALL X PIT’s Nuke, welI… it goes without saying. Let’s just say nothing really survives it.;;
BALL X PIT’s combos and fusions are a pure joy!
BALL X PUT also features The Hamlet. As one progresses, they’ll build up a plot of land. While very tiny at first, BALL X PIT’s Hamlet expands as one amasses more gold.
From planting wheat, to growing trees, to putting down rocks, to even mining for gold (later), all of these tasks contribute to a balanced economy.
At least until BALL X PIT’s late game.
BALL X PIT’s buildings – and subsequent upgrades – require materials and gold. However, one also needs someone to build them.
Enter BALL X PIT’s Harvest Time – when utilized, players can aim their characters and shoot them into the fields. Each field or tree they go over is farmed by them, and each new building they hit gets built up a bit more.
Think Pong – players want these guys bouncing more and more as they build speed get more done.
Honestly, BALL X PIT’s Harvest Time is just as addictive as the ball-bouncing part of the game.
On top of being just plain fun, BALL X PIT always gifts shiny new toys to play with.
On that note, each character has a small buff or playstyle to try – one can even eventually bring in two at once!
Put simply, BALL X PIT’s gameplay loop is extremely addictive.
BALL X PIT is one of the most satisfying and engaging games we’ve played all year. No matter what type of gamer you are, BALL X PIT is a must-play.
