HERE FOR YOU

Fan songs are an integral part of an idol group’s discography, and they’re at their best when they’ve got some heft to their melody and production. TWS are uniquely suited to this formula, as their music is already so melody-driven. And to add extra sentiment to Here For You (내일이 되어 줄게), member Dohoon participated in lyric-writing.

Here For You follows a tried-and-true template, but if it ain’t broken there’s no need to fix it. Its sweet pop sound features a lilting shimmer that builds to a propulsive centerpiece. The chorus is easily the song’s standout as it pushes forward with a sense of addictive optimism. It’s musically manipulative, but I tend to be a sucker for this approach even as its machinations are obvious.

The track also builds to its requisite high note, but this moment unleashes a bit of frustration for me. I’ve noticed that most K-pop producers these days choose to fade out power notes rather than let them breathe. I know full well that Dohoon can nail and sustain a note like this, so why can’t the arrangement let his voice stretch out instead of immediately truncating the climax? In our age of two minute streaming jingles, efficiency is often the goal. But sometimes, efficiency whisks us right past the best parts of a song.
