Full Album Stream: Karate Steve –Time Under Tension

Hai Karate was low budget cologne and aftershave from the ’70s, and the branding behind the dopey name assured men that if they wore this putrid scent they’d have to fight women off. Which is all kinds of crazy and offensive. It also smelled horrible. Karate Steve, on the other hand is a heavy/noisy/sludgy quartet from Boston, MA that definitely doesn’t stink. We can’t speak to whether or not they’re fighting off women, but the band’s quirky, progressive and occasionally melodic new full-length, Time Under Tension, would certainly appeal to all genders and orientations.  The quartet—Ben Davis (guitar/vocals), Robb White (lead guitar/vocals), Earl Brown (bass), Zach LeWinter (drums)—was formed a decade ago and Time Under Tension is their third full-length and a quality follow-up to 2022’s No Way Out But Through.

Time Under Tension was produced by Alex Allinson at the Bridge Sound & Stage and mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering. It will be available digitally on October 24, with physical versions to follow. Place your preorder here.

Ben Davis had this to say about Karate Steve’s latest:

“This record feels like a logical next step for us. No Way Out But Through was written mostly individually during the pandemic, and Time Under Tension was all of us in the same room for the whole writing process, resulting in a more groove oriented, cohesive sounding album without losing the quick cuts and style changes. If you’re a fan of heavy music there’s something on here for you.”
