Chicago’s Burned in Effigy return with a full-length inferno that marries neoclassical precision to melodic death-metal mayhem. On Tyrannus Aeternum, the quintet sharpen every blade first forged on 2022’s Rex Mortem, turning technical mastery into something feral and cinematic. Across eleven tracks, the band balances virtuosity and violence—ornate solos, airtight rhythm work, and symphonic flourishes courtesy of orchestrator Graham Southern—without ever losing the head-bang quotient.
Recorded at Beal Audio and Bricktop Recording with producer Jordan Beal, Tyrannus Aeternum is equal parts craftsmanship and carnage. From the galloping fury of “Retribution” to the ominous sprawl of “Citadel,” the album surges forward with purpose, each song a chapter in a blood-stained saga of conquest and decay. The cover art by Timon Kokott completes the picture: grand, grim, and apocalyptic.
Formed in 2017, Burned in Effigy have already shared stages with Obscura, Revocation, and Orbit Culture—and this self-released follow-up proves they can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any of them. It’s technical without being sterile, melodic without mercy, and timed perfectly for Samhain.
