It took Decibel’s co-nerds exactly 26 seconds to start making moves on today’s installment. For those unfamiliar with rapidly rising brutal death metal act PeelingFlesh, no other word more accurately describes their sound than one of metal’s most overwrought adjectives: heavy. With tunings dropped below the floor, indecipherable guttural vocals and Mortician levels of samples spread throughout their discography, there is no doubt that when the Oklahoma outfit hits the stage, they shoot to kill. But those with a keen ear and flashbacks of pouring quarters into a legendary mid-’90s cabinet, however, should understand where this is going. Only 26 seconds into lead single “Midnight” off of the band’s new EP PF Radio 2, a subtle yet distinct sound can be heard right before the song’s first crushing breakdown: the laugh of Mortal Kombat’s primary antagonist Shao Khan. The invite made and vocalist D. Harris and drummer Joe Pelletier, our newest challengers, had arrived.
That’s not to say that the band has been quiet about their nerd bonafides. On the 1,986th episode of Digital Bus Tour’s Bus Invaders series, Harris discussed their games of choices, including Call of Duty, Need For Speed, Skater XL and many more. In their latest promo photo, the frontman can be seen wearing a Neon Genesis Evangelion shirt. A sample from the title track from sole full length The G Code features a clip from the classic anime franchise Mobile Suit Gundam. But it was at this intersection of metal and gaming that the duo found themselves in the glow of gaming’s most extremely extreme column. Tuning in from their home base, Harris and Pelletier take the time to talk Call of Duty’s zombies mode, what the self-described car guys look for in a racing game, the rise of simulation titles and what soundtrack would be the perfect vehicle to introduce the gamer community to slam.
PF Radio 2 is available now via Unique Leader Records and can be ordered here.
