Song Review: Lucy – Where’s Your Love

A couple of weeks ago, Lucy released an OST that captured my attention. I love when the group colors slightly outside genre lines, bringing in electronic elements to compliment their existing tone. For a few years now, the band’s work has threatened to congeal into one single sound, struggling to find the killer melodies that let each song stand as its own classic. New single Where’s Your Love (사랑은 어쩌고) is another example of Lucy being Lucy, but does it boast any unique features that would set it apart from past tracks?

No, not really. A casual listener would have a hard time distinguishing this song from the band’s many other plaintive highlights. That’s not to say that a band must reinvent themselves with every new project, but a certain level of growth and experimentation is needed to keep their work fresh. Where’s Your Love is perfectly serviceable as a Lucy track, but nothing about it makes me want to rush toward the replay button the way I did when Lucy first burst onto the scene with epic songs like Flare and Snooze. I fear they’re settling into a mushy, sentimental OST sound that’s ironically much more safe than their actual OSTs.

Because of this, I feel like I can only recommend Where’s Your Love to existing Lucy fans who just want more of the same thing. For newbies, the group has far more compelling work to explore that truly acts as a game-changer for both Lucy and the wider K-rock scene.
