Following the pandemic, we saw the release of an immense number of albums written and recorded during Covid times, but a much smaller number of acts were actually formed when we were all supposed to be socially distancing. Fuzzed-out Detroit proto-metalists Winds of Neptune are one of those outfits and they are finally releasing their self-titled debut, written and conceived during that not-so-distant plague. The trio—Mike Alonso (drums), Kevin Roberts (guitars), Ross Westerbur (bass/vocals)—were a natural fit together, since not only did they share a musical aesthetic, they’d been in various bands together over the years (though never all three in the same act). Alonso, specifically, has been in dozens of bands and his regular gig is drumming for Irish rockers Flogging Molly with ex-Fastway vocalist Dave King. (How’s that for an unexpected degree or two of separation from Motörhead?) On this eight-track bruiser, Winds of Neptune do their Detroit roots proud with their heavy riffs, bluesy thunder and relentless groove.
Winds of Neptune was recorded by Jake Halkey and Al Sutton at Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak, Michigan, mastered by Chris Goosman at Baseline Audio Labs in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It’s set for release on CD, vinyl and digitally on November 21 via Small Stone Recordings. Place your preorder here.
Bassist/vocalist Ross Westerbur had this to say about WON’s debut full-length:
“This record is the culmination of a road that started in Kevin’s basement with us jamming Deep Purple and Jethro Tull songs. The band and the songs kind of emerged organically from there, and it’s very cool to see a record come out of that same process. Although we won’t stop jamming Deep Purple and Jethro Tull tunes anytime soon.”
