Song Review: VVUP – Super Model

When last we heard from girl group VVUP, they were inviting us to their house party — over, and over, and over again. That pre-release promised upbeat sounds for their first mini album and the colorful (and very LOUD) video for title track Super Model certainly backs that up. We’re in full camp territory here, at least when it comes to visuals. On a purely musical front, Super Model is something we’ve heard many times before.

At this point, there’s a checklist for this kind of song. Skittering beats. Airy vocals. Subdued, stylish production. Of course, any established genre will have its own tropes and lovers of the genre will celebrate them. I’m no different, and often revel in predictability when it comes to my preferred style of song. However, I just can’t muster much enthusiasm around a track like Super Model.

In a parallel world, this song would fully harness its inherent camp, amp up the energy and give us a strutting anthem. Instead, it feels like every element has been neutered to fit within an easy-listening approach that K-pop agencies hope will garner chart success. The melodies are sound, the performance is solid but it’s all weirdly sleepy without the kind of dynamic spikes that make this subdued style stand out.
