WORLD PREMIERE: Decibel GWAR Mini-Documentary “Behind the Gore”

Decibel‘s cover story this month digs into GWAR’s 40th anniversary: how it started, how it’s going, and why the band still matters. The piece features more than two dozen interviews and the same painstaking detail as our exhaustive 11k-word oral history on Scumdogs of the Universe five years ago. It’s only our third pull-out cover in the magazine’s two-decade-plus history, so get one now before they sell out.

“We have always been able to say whatever we want to say and we’ve always said it without fear,” frontman and vocalist Mike Bishop (the Berserker Blothar) says in the story.  “I think that the band demonstrates that the world does have a sense of humor.”

While the cover story delves into GWAR’s history and place in pop culture, Decibel is also excited to give you an up-close look at the work that goes into putting together a GWAR show each day on tour, with a new mini-documentary “Behind the Gore.”

Longtime Decibel writer Justin Norton (who also wrote the cover story and is occasionally forced to write about himself in the third person) compiled the footage and interviews. Decibel art director Michael Wohlberg designed and edited “Behind The Gore,” which features images by San Francisco-area music photographer Raymond Ahner.

Stream “Behind The Gore” below, and please share the documentary on your social feeds. Many thanks to the team at GWAR for providing us with access to make this happen!
