Song Review: tripleS msnz sun – Bubble Gum Girl

In keeping with their enormous group configuration, tripleS have blitzed us with an equally enormous fleet of comebacks today. “msnz” is a “universe” within tripleS (their words, not mine) with four “dimensions,” each of which has released their own song and music video. I rarely have enough stamina to write about four tracks from even my most favorite artists, so I’ll be giving each song its own mini-review today.

Sub-unit sun consists of members Xinyu, YooYeon, Mayu, ChaeYeon, HyeRin, and ChaeWon and they’re releasing Bubble Gum Girl today. This is clearly the “cute” unit, though their version of cute (mostly) forgoes chirpy aegyo in favor of a more subdued, streamlined sound. Bubble Gum Girl‘s chorus is catchy in a commerical jingle way. It’ll stick in your head but you may not want it there. The verses kill time with airy asides before we plunge into “pop! pop! pop!” repetition. If you’re going to release a song like this, you might as well just go full bore into the cheesiness. Pump up the instrumental to ridiculous heights and pull as many exaggerated faces as you can. Instead, Bubble Gum Girl attempts to find a safe middle ground that’s ultimately pretty forgettable. I like its warm synth pads, though!
