Where they from?
Leipzig, Germany. Hey, not to brag, but I won four out of five daily fantasy hockey matchups yesterday. This is my biggest accomplishment since I cleaned half of my room last week. I would have gone five for five but the Columbus Blue Jackets, the most irrelevant team in all North American sports, decided to play Jet Greaves at goalie instead of Elvis Merzļikins. You know society is rotting from within when such important decisions are made in haste.
Why the hype?
There’s a certain strand of powerviolence that I refer to as the ‘blown out’ variety. By ‘blown out’ I mean everything production-wise is just pushed to the extreme, the guitars, drums and even vocals just sizzle with maximized gain and vicious reverb. Nails are sort of the godfather of this particular style but they have birthed a certain field of bands who’s goal is to jolt your senses with sheer volume. Haexler are certainly one of those bands and their output is likewise jarring. Every time I put them on my laptop I have to lower the volume lest I frighten my cat while she’s doing her daily zoomies in the hallway. Don’t want her to think I’m mad at her, even though she did get into my oatmeal last week.
Latest Release?
Talkshow, out now on Holy Goat Records. Part of this ‘blown out’ sound is a very liberal use of the HM-2. I used to really dislike this guitar sound but after years of listening to bands with shitty production, I’ve finally put my big-boy pants on and come around to it. This shit is LOUD, that is the whole fucking point, to replicate a dentist drill while frightening your mischievous cat. Also, shout-out the Mad Men samples, nothing says brutality like Don Draper’s casual sexism.
