The world is fucked, humans are cruel and everyone is tired—these are the sentiments that inform Unspeakable Horrors Emanating from Within, the semi-new album from Canadian death/doom purveyors Anthrodynia. Formed in 2024, Unspeakable Horrors came out in August, introducing the world to the retro-sounding outfit.
If you missed the album when it came out, you have another chance right now, but only after watching the video for “A Rotten Sun.” Both musically and thematically, it’s a strong representation of what Anthrodyniais and what beliefs inform the music.
“The song is about how there are people so ruled by selfishness, they ruin the world around them,” drummer Durell Smith tells Decibel. “They ruin the people around them. They only know greed and expect no consequence, when in reality they are digging their own grave. The video is a representation of the world this kind of thinking will inevitably lead to.”
The accompanying music video shows footage of a destroyed post-apocalyptic world: structures destroyed, sun blacked out and humans living in underground bunkers. Whether or not “A Rotten Sun” is an accurate prediction of the future remains to be seen, but you can watch the video and listen to Unspeakable Horrors Emanating from Within right now.
