Song Review: BABYMONSTER – Supa Dupa Luv

BABYMONSTER tend to wring the most they can from each album, promoting several songs with music videos long after the actual comeback has occurred. Their promotions move into a third month with Supa Dupa Luv, the latest release from their We Go Up mini album. On the plus side, it’s nice to see a variety of sounds get pushed from each project. However, not every song calls for the extra promo.

Supa Dupa Luv takes a far more laidback approach than either We Go Up or Psycho, delivering a mid-tempo R&B vibe over a trap-infused beat. It sounds more like Western pop than K-pop, which makes sense given the group’s global push. This overall style isn’t something I tend to gravitate towards, especially without fantastic melodies to buoy the track. BABYMONSTER fire off some lovely vocals and an exciting rap verse, but the actual song leaves me pretty cool. The chorus is a clunker, tracing the lines of the rhythm but lacking the kind of bounce that could make it stand against the best of its genre.

Supa Dupa Luv‘s verses are primarily rapped, which is an approach that BABYMONSTER tend to excel at. But like so many K-pop attempts at hip-hop, the phrasing follows well-established trends rather that painting a line of its own design. This makes the track feel overly familiar when it should be opting for a more unique flavor. It works fine as subdued album filler, but makes for a pretty forgettable promo track.
