North Carolina melodic death metalers Blackwater Drowning ease you into the leadoff track, “The Sixth Omen,” from their upcoming second full-length album, Obscure Sorrows, with a soft, ominous orchestral synth opening that belies the mayhem to come. This five-piece—Jeremy Bennett (guitar), Morgan Riley (vocals), Aamon Dalton (drums), Aria Novi (bass), Ron Dalton Jr. (guitar)—keep the synths in the mix, but a bruising volley of melodic riffs and percussive rhythms guide “The Sixth Omen” from heavy to heavier as Riley turns herself inside out vocally. The track is ultimately a well-crafted and balanced melding of drop-tuned brutality and melody-infused passages.
Obscure Sorrows was mixed and mastered by Cryptopsy guitarist Christian Donaldson. It’s set for digital release on February 27 via Bleeding Art Collective/Blood Blast Distribution, with physical copies to follow. You can pre-save it here. Vocalist Morgan Riley explained the track’s lyrical theme:
“This one takes its main inspiration from the story of La Llorona, a betrayed woman, who in a fit of rage and despair, commits heinous acts that she spends eternity mourning. It tells a story of heartbreak, rage, regret, and despair, and ultimately a grim acceptance of what has come to pass.”
