We’re reminded of the time our parental units gave us a pillow that had “Stressed Spelled Backwards Is Desserts” emblazoned on it and we weren’t really sure what to make of the pillow, or the gesture. Except that it just seemed weird and fucking random at the time. (Stepdad somehow found it hilarious.) Which is our weird and random segue into this full album stream from New Jersey’s mathy, hardcore noise quartet Stress Spells. We’re premiering their brand new—and wonderfuly concise—full-length, Hearts Never Tire. Possessing a mere nine short tracks, we can assure you that your riff-to-ruble ratio is nonetheless super solid, because these folks—Jack Carino (vocals/guitar), Jillian Keats (vocals/bass), Adam Kaniper (vocals/guitar), Kevin Henson (vocals/drums)—pack a lot into every manic, twitchy and fiercely energetic track. Trust us, you’ll have plenty of room for desserts. Ugh.
Hearts Never Tire is set for release on vinyl and digitally via Fuzz Records on February 6. Place your preorder here. And if you like what you hear in the Bandcamp player below, check out the band’s live dates posted at the bottom of this post.
Vocalist/guitarist Jack Carino explained the title and summed up his thoughts on the new rekkid thusly:
“The title Hearts Never Tire comes from a line in the song ‘A Beautiful Dance With A Chainsaw.’ I feel like it encapsulates the energy of the entire record. Despite the anger, conflict, and confusion we constantly have to wade through, all while trying our best to be a person existing in the world, there is a brute force of human spirit that keeps pushing us.
It pulls us out of the mud even when it feels like we’ve been pushed down over and over.
At times it feels like a desperate and delusional state of perseverance, but I believe that’s what we need to be in order to stay alive. These songs were all written in true screamo fashion, from a place of deep vulnerability and honesty. There’s something really scary and sometimes a little embarrassing about wearing your heart on your sleeve in the way we did on this record, but after all the time we spent carefully and meticulously putting it together, there isn’t a thing I would do differently. Recording the entire thing independently is probably something most people would consider a big risk, but it completely paid off. We really grew as a band and collaborators getting into that creative dynamic together. I would say, we really captured the essence of the band on this album. It’s short, raw, and to the point.”
