Song Review: MADEIN – Super Obvious

MADEIN have had a rough go, at the whim of an agency with serious allegations against it. This has caused them to lose three members already and makes it impossible not to read between the lines when the girls depart for “personal reasons.” But purely from a musical standpoint, their output has been decent. New track Super Obvious (안 봐도 비디오) also has its strengths, though the song doesn’t quite capitalize on them in the end.

Up until the first chorus, my ears perked up and I wondered if Super Obvious would be the year’s first great title track. I love the cascading energy of this segment. Percussion steadily builds as guitar joins the arrangement to deliver a wallop of drama. The girls sound great and there are actual melodies driving the structure.

Super Obvious‘s chorus is also good, but stops short of “great.” The refrains feel more muddled and lack the kind of “hit you over the head” strength I’d hope for from a rock-fueled track like this. It’s as if the chorus is a draft with potential, waiting for revision to polish it up. However, this overall sound feels quite refreshing in K-pop’s current landscape and I’m leaving space for the song to grow with more listens.
