Full EP Stream: Dissentience – “Kaiju”

Pennsylvania death-thrashers Dissentience are going big on their new EP, Kaiju, not unlike the monsters that inspired it. Their fourth release, Kaiju shows the band take a more progressive and conceptual approach to things than on previous releases, like their 2022 album, Empire Anatomy.

“The best kaiju movies aren’t just special effects showcases, they also explore the impact of the destruction on humanity,” Dissentience tell Decibel. “Incorporating equal parts bombast and psychological horror into the lyrics was a conscious decision to try to avoid some of the campiness that comes with the territory of giant monster movies. Everyone has monsters running through their lives, metaphorical or otherwise, so we thought it best not to give the listener too much in terms of visual description, providing the narrative for people’s imaginations and interpretations to run wild. This EP is a Godzilla-sized step forward for the band on all fronts into what we feel is the purest expression of our vision for the band to date.”

In addition to the lyrical considerations made by the band, Dissentience express the chaos/calm dynamic by incorporating acoustic intros and clean interludes that simulate the pace and tone of a movie like Godzilla or Pulgasari. It’s a big step forward for the band, who began to truly find their footing on their last release four years ago.

Kaiju is out on February 20 and can be purchased on Bandcamp.
