Congrats on the recent PUBG: BLINDSPOT Early Access launch! I love its top-down perspective – what inspired this direction?

Seungmyeong Yang

Thank you very much — we really appreciate it.

A top-down perspective allows players to intuitively understand terrain structure and the placement of various gameplay elements. It naturally encourages strategic thinking, which is why it is often well suited for strategy-driven genres like RTS or AOS. That led us to wonder whether we could emphasize the strategic layer of tactical shooter gameplay through a top-down approach.

With that in mind, we began development with the idea of creating a realistic and strategic tactical shooter from a top-down perspective. We implemented a visible vision range system, cover elements of varying heights, and a shooting control system capable of clearly expressing the distinct characteristics of different firearms. When all of these elements came together—along with shared vision between teammates—we became confident that they could form a genuinely fun core action experience.

As a result, even players who become only slightly familiar with the game begin naturally checking each other’s vision and adjusting their positioning strategically. We also found that it creates more organic team interactions that would be difficult to achieve in a traditional FPS, making PUBG: BLINDSPOT particularly well suited for delivering the fantasy of coordinated CQB tactics.

PUBG: BLINDSPOT takes a new approach that is not bound by existing genre conventions, so we made a strong effort to build a core community through multiple demo sessions and actively listen to their feedback. The input we received from dedicated fans on Discord in particular has been a major help in making the game more player-friendly, and it played an important role in shaping the current Early Access version.

Feedback about moments that felt uncomfortable or areas that needed improvement has often been the most helpful. As developers, we tend to play the game so much that we become accustomed to certain aspects or less sensitive to them over time.

One piece of feedback that stood out to me was a very detailed suggestion regarding changes to the level structure. It allowed us to understand how players were actually responding to our level design decisions and helped us refine our approach. In fact, it had a decisive influence on our decision to expand the plantable area around the Crypt in the Unranked: Demolition mode.

When it comes to PUBG: BLINDSPOT’s content at launch, I saw you are expanding tactical options with Blaze and his Molotov-based area control mechanics. What led to the decision of going with a defense-exclusive character at this time?

Seungmyeong Yang

We learned a great deal from the August demo. One of the key lessons was that, compared to the February demo, Attack team Agent compositions had become too standardized, and the win rate for the defense side had risen significantly.

At first glance, adding another Attack team Agent might have seemed like the logical solution. However, we approached the issue differently. We found that the higher defensive win rate was partly due to defenders not being at a disadvantage even in mid-range engagements. Even when Attackers destroyed barricades, defenders were often able to eliminate them one by one thanks to strong mid-range combat capabilities.

To clarify the tactical identities of Attack and Defense, we decided to give Attackers more strength in mid- to long-range engagements and defenders more strength in close-range combat. As part of this adjustment, Zen, who uses a DMR, was changed from a common (Attack/Defense) Agent to an Attack-exclusive Agent. Patch, who uses the AUG and has a gadget that can block roaming routes, was changed from a defense-exclusive Agent to a common (Attack/Defense) role.

After making these changes and clarifying the tactical characteristics of each side, we noticed that defenders—who must cover multiple entry routes—often lacked sufficient area control with only one Agent, Dropout, who uses Gas Launcher. To allow for more varied defensive positioning and strategies, we decided to introduce an additional Agent with area control capabilities.

At the same time, many fans in the community had frequently requested fire-related mechanics, and we believe PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS’ Molotov may have influenced that expectation. In part to respond to those expectations, we chose to implement the new area control gadget as a Molotov Cocktail for Blaze.

As a small team, we have limitations when it comes to supporting multiple platforms. Given the nature of the genre, where anti-cheat is particularly important, it can be even more challenging to provide detailed support across various environments. We received many requests from players asking for support on macOS or SteamOS. Through NVIDIA GeForce NOW, we are glad that we are able to indirectly offer PUBG: BLINDSPOT to players in those environments as well.

NVIDIA’s engineers were able to get PUBG: BLINDSPOT running smoothly on GeForce NOW in a relatively short time, even without extensive technical support from our side. It gave us the impression that GeForce NOW is a strong platform that allows even small teams to support a broader range of players without requiring large-scale development resources.

Finally, what are some of the most impressive PUBG: BLINDSPOT matches you’ve seen so far?

Seungmyeong Yang

The first one was during G-Star in Korea in October 2024, when the game was still called Project ARC. A tournament was held at the time, and a team led by Kickstart from North America delivered the kind of play we had envisioned in an ideal scenario. It was very impressive to watch. That match later became the basis for the gameplay trailer shown during Steam Next Fest in February 2025, and it also provided a great deal of inspiration during development.

The second example was from the August demo period, during a Korean tournament. The winning team demonstrated perfect coordination among all five players and completely dominated their opponents. Their attacking strategy—combining breaching with pre-coordinated throwable usage so that the defending team had almost no time to react—was particularly memorable.
