Pete Capella Interview – Iconic Voice Actor Talks Silver the Hedgehog & More
Gamers Heroes
It’s a huge honor!
I’ve been a huge Sonic fan since I was five; I was there for 9.9.99, played all the games, and I have even met many of the Sonics – and now I’ve met you!
I know you’ve been a big part of the Sonic community with Sonic NEON, Sonic EXPO, and now Sonic Boost.
What’s it like being a key member of the Sonic community?
Pete Capella
It’s a genuine honor! The Sonic fans and creators are so amazing and talented.
It’s as much of an honor for me to be a part of that community as they feel about me being there.
You know what I mean?
Gamers Heroes
Absolutely!
What are some of your favorite community stories around the Sonic series?
Pete Capella
So every piece of art on my table – except for the game capture from Sonic 06 – is fan-commissioned.
I’m so impressed with the talented part of the community, whether it be the fan dubs, the art, or the music.
It’s all so great – I’m just impressed top to bottom with the people!
Gamers Heroes
I’ve got a self-portrait done in the Uekawa-style myself!
There’s just so much talent there!
On that note, one of my friends says Silver is his favorite character in the series – no joke!
I’m not just saying that because you’re here – he loves his drive, his hope, his angst.
How have you been able to channel that “Strength in Silver” that has defined the character in Sonic 06 and beyond?
Pete Capella
I think it’s a strength that we all need right now.
The world is falling apart, and I think we as people need to remember that good will always prevail.
That’s how I try to live! It comes from there.
Gamers Heroes
Amen to that!
So I did see G to the Next Level’s interview with you, and you mentioned your love of NHL ‘94 – fantastic taste!
Pete Capella
I love NHL ‘94 – I think it’s the best video game ever made!
Gamers Heroes
You know what? That’s absolutely justified!
But what’s your current gaming addiction?
Pete Capella
Fortnite!
Gamers Heroes
That’s a good one! You have the collaborations with everything.
Pete Capella
I believe there were Sonic cars, but my wife and I play Fortnite on the daily!
Gamers Heroes
There you go!
So I saw you were part of the Improvision Jam Comedy Labs troupe as “The Sniper!”
I’ve chatted with a number of people have done improv like Richard Horvitz, who said some of his best lines come from improv – especially when it came to Billy & Mandy.
Are there any improv lines – or lines we may have missed – that you’re especially proud that were spur of the moment?
Pete Capella
I don’t think they let us improvise much in the Sonic games…
But if you watch The Most Popular Girls in School, when it came to most of those lines, the creators were so generous in letting us improvise the entire time.
Gamers Heroes
I haven’t seen it, but it’s in my queue right now.
What would you say is your most proud improv moment from that show in particular?
Pete Capella
I don’t know that there is just one…
So that was the first time I had the opportunity to play a queer character.
That was so scary to me, because I’m not – I’m a cis male.
I went to all of my LGBTQ+ friends and I said: “Hey, can I do this?”
And they were like: “Yeah, but just don’t make it stereotypical.”
So improvising in that world was just like,
“Hey man, don’t just do your typical gay jokes – find something human about it.”
That’s the stuff I think I’m most proud of.
In the last season of that show, there are some beautiful, heartfelt moments that were improvised.
They weren’t just like jokes back and forth, but just some beautiful drama.
I thought that was cool!
Gamers Heroes
What would you say is your most proud moment from that show?
Pete Capella
If you watch the final episode, there’s a scene between my character and a character called Than – or Jonathan – where they just have this beautiful, heartfelt moment at the end.
That was my favorite thing to do!
Gamers Heroes
So we’re talking about all these fans that look up to you…
Is there anybody – whether here or anywhere else – that you’ve fanboyed over or were starstruck?
Anything goes; it could be TV, movies…
Pete Capella
I loved getting to hang out and meet Rob Paulsen! We had hour long conversations; he was a hero of mine growing up because I loved the Animaniacs.
I met Steve Guttenberg, who’s a comedy hero of mine, and we talked for an hour!
Meeting these guys, being at these conventions – it is such a beautiful thing.
Being on this side of the convention where I’m toe-to-toe with all of my heroes – it’s really cool!
Gamers Heroes
I totally understand!
I was chatting with Kellen Goff, and he mentioned that in working with Bob Bergen and Richard Horvitz that he has his own toolbox.
Is there anything from these other voice actors they may have added to your own toolbox?
Obviously you’re doing your own thing!
Pete Capella
Sure!
I like hearing about the way things used to be in the industry and the way things have changed.
I’m always listening to how to be, because – remember – they call it show business for a reason.
The art part is art, but the other part is business. You have to learn how to promote yourself and be a good business person.
That’s what I try to take away from those guys.
Gamers Heroes
I totally understand!
On that note, I know you have your own production company – Good Boy Treat Productions.
I saw on Instagram that you seek to find the truth in stories and share their uniqueness.
What would you say is your most fascinating project?
Pete Capella
The most fascinating project never got to go anywhere, unfortunately.
We were pitching a show based off of a graphic novel I loved called “Deadhorse.”
We made a short film that my wife wrote and starred in, and she was absolutely incredible just exploring the idea of an independent woman wanting to have a baby on her own without a husband.
It was a really beautiful story that she told.
Gamers Heroes
Keeping it short and sweet, I’ve asked this question to a number of voice actors…
A lot of people are looking to enter the voice acting space.
I just got out of Eric Vale’s panel; all these people look up to people like him, people like you. All these people have been inspired by your work in Sonic.
So far, everybody has given me a different, unique answer.
What would you suggest to people looking to enter the voice acting space?
Pete Capella
Remember the second word of voice acting? It’s all about acting.
Nobody loves Silver because of his voice – he could have had any voice.
It was his story and the way the story was brought to life – like you said, finding that resilience and that inspiration.
Well, that all comes from the acting part of things. I could have given him any voice, and he would have had to tell the same story.
To me, to be a voice actor, you need to learn to be an actor first.
It’s always acting first!
Gamers Heroes
You’ve touched so many lives 20 years after Sonic 06!
This means a lot to me – Sonic means a lot to me – and I really appreciate the time.
Pete Capella
Thank you so much!
