Song Review: Dayoung (WJSN) – What’s A Girl To Do

WJSN’s Dayoung had a stealthy, surprise hit last year with Body. That success didn’t coax Starship Entertainment into doing anything but the bare minimum for the group’s anniversary this February, but it does result in a new solo track today. What’s A Girl To Do takes a similarly global approach as Body, no doubt hoping to replicate its success.

I was cheering on Body‘s chart rise even if I found the song itself pretty generic. I’m delighted for Dayoung and wish she’d release more interesting music while taking advantage of this successful era in her career. Being a fan of music from all over the world, I hear songs like What’s A Girl To Do daily. Its light dance/hip-hop beat carries no identity of its own and the breathy melodies have so little range that you practically whisper the entire song. At just over two minutes in length, it doesn’t boast much compelling structure either. A listener could be dropped into any point of the song, hear ten seconds, and essentially get the full experience. It’s a pleasant vibe, but I’m looking for more than vibes these days.
