Song Review: WHIB – Kick It

I write about a ton of K-pop songs — often several a day. I have a pretty good memory for music, but there is definitely a subset of tracks I can’t recall weeks (or days… or even hours…) after hearing them. That category is growing as K-pop melodies flatten and new groups become ubiquitous. WHIB are a casualty of this phenomenon. I couldn’t tell you a single thing about their past songs, but I do remember their silly acronym of a team name, even if I still don’t know what a “WHIB” is supposed to be.

With that in mind, new single Kick It has one criteria for success: is it memorable?

In the short term, the song’s laidback breeziness and catchy hook help WHIB establish a presence, even if there are many other peers releasing this same style. It’s an easy-listening funk pop track, perfect for summer drives or lazy Sunday mornings. The instrumental shimmers with a bright energy and the melodies are sturdy if unremarkable. Kick It leaves a good impression, and that’s not always an easy feat. I doubt whether I’ll still be playing it in several months’ time, but I’d like to see WHIB take this sound and bend it to their own musical perspective… whatever that may be.
