Tarot Cards (from Song Of The Sirens – 2020)

Previous Thoughts: “In some ways, it doesn’t feel like Tarot Cards has a chorus at all. It plays more like an extension of the verses, but it works thanks to the breathless arrangement. I love how the percussion briefly pulls away, only to slam back a split second later with renewed vigor. It’s just super dynamic.” (full review)

Updated thoughts: Yeah, this one’s all about its dynamic arrangement. On its face, Tarot Cards is a style of GFriend song we’ve heard many times before, but the instrumental sweeps you off your feet at every turn, constantly upping the ante. This makes up for its lack of a clear centerpiece. Tarot Cards is more a showcase of skill than a hooky little pop song, and that’s okay. It’s nice to have a variety of structures and approaches on an album, and this is a clear highlight on Song Of The Sirens. However, I think I was a bit generous with the initial rating. I’m not sure this is quite a “9”… though it’s very close.
