For those looking for a challenge this new year, Penguin Mug Games’ new pastel puzzle-platformer Super Puzzled Cat is here to test one’s might and feel cute in the process.

Featuring a brass tacks approach to platforming, Super Puzzled Cat has players reaching a ball of yarn precariously placed at certain parts of each level. With players taking control of a pink-haired catgirl that utters the cutest “nya” at each jump, one would think that this title would be a walk through the Grasslands.

However, players will quickly learn that they’ll have to get from point A to point B by any means necessary. Pixel-perfect platforming is an absolute must, and each of its stages has a flow that must be solved.

Thankfully, time is on one’s side with Super Puzzled Cat – quite literally, in fact.

One can set up multiple save points in Super Puzzled Cat at any given time, and can also load previous saves if they do so choose. Want to go back and grab that (literal) coin? Super Puzzled Cat lets players skip back multiple areas if they’d like; just be warned that it’s a one-way trip.

As a result, Super Puzzled Cat is a game of trial and error. While we enjoyed figuring out the intricacies of each level and figuring out how the physics played into its stage design, it is admittedly not for everyone – especially with some of its “gotcha” elements that were less than welcome after the first few times.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, (try) again. 

On that same note, Super Puzzled Cat features a number of abilities that are woven into each stage – some with multiple abilities at any given time. From turning into a bouncy gummy cat to walking on air as a ghost, this focus on multiple objectives at any given time can be tricky.

There is a high skill ceiling to Super Puzzled Cat, one that is admittedly not for everyone. However, persistence and experimention in Super Puzzled Cat leads to a level of satisfaction that those who grew up in the 16-bit era will absolutely cherish.

Of course, there’s a few things that make things easier. Players can spend said coin at shops to buy accessories that make things easier, can unlock later stages and play them out of order, and can even unlock a God Mode if they bite the dust enough times – don’t ask how we know that.

Super Puzzled Cat’s brass tacks approach to platforming may require patience and time, but it also delivers an immense feeling of satisfaction for those willing to learn the inner workings of this title.
