From the intersection of gallows and grind comes Galgeberg, a death metal trio that delivers the perfect antidote to our modern chaos. Named after Oslo’s historical site of executions, the band embodies the raw, unfiltered spirit of extreme music with a sound as sharp as the blade of a guillotine. Today, they unveil “Epicurean Paradox,” the blistering first single from their forthcoming EP, Cerberus, set to drop in mid-March 2025.
Recorded in a single chaotic November day with technician Ruben Willem, Cerberus is the sonic equivalent of Cerberus itself: a snarling, sulfuric three-headed beast that blends punk’s primal energy with the crushing weight of death metal. The EP’s venomous lyrics lash out at religion, politics, and humanity’s slow spiral into madness.
“Epicurean Paradox” sets the tone with buzzsaw riffs, guttural roars, and a rhythm section powerful enough to crack pavement. Bård Eithun (drums), Peter Boström (bass and backing vocals), and Peter Vegem (guitars and lead vocals) channel decades of experience into this track, delivering a feral energy that feels both immediate and timeless.
Guitarist and vocalist Peter Vegem told Decibel, “The title of the song refers to the dilemma, or rather trilemma, regarding the “problem of evil”. Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher who was into religious skepticism. His famous paradox says that if there’s an omniscient, omnipotent and omnibenevolent god, there wouldn’t be evil. Well, it most certainly is evil going on in this world, so if there’s a god, at least one of the three characteristics gotta go. As the song says; your god is a fraud. We don’t necessarily mention which god we’re talking about, but personally I think all religions who worship some man-made deity are utter bullshit.” He continued, “When it comes to the music this one is ferocious. As with all our songs the HM2-pedal is maxed, but on this track the riffs are also heavily influenced by one of our all time fave death metal bands; Dismember. It’s something about the speed and sheer brutality combined with more melodic sections that I find very satisfying and addictive. In the midst of the mayhem there’s actually riffs that you can hum along to. Bang on!”
North American fans can grab Cerberus on vinyl and cassette via Our Ancient Future, while European listeners can snag vinyl and CDs through Aftermath Music Norway. In the meantime, pre-save “Epicurean Paradox” here before it officially drops this Friday.
