Unless you’re a Great Lakes enthusiast, there isn’t much happening in Erie, PA, which makes it the perfect home base for brooding black metal project Muskeg Charnel. A one-man affair led by a musician identified as Wretch, Muskeg Charnel are at the midway point in a series of albums titled Decomposition, exploring themes of death and decay. The fourth entry in the series, Livor Mortis, comes out later this week, February 28, but Decibel is hosting an early stream today.
Building on a base of second-wave black metal, Muskeg Charnel take a significant leap forward from their 2023 entry, Decomposition Part 3: Rigor Mortis. On Livor Mortis, Muskeg Charnel weave in melodic and ambient influences, elevating the music to be more listenable and distinct without dropping the raw or dark nature of the Decomposition series.
When asked about the release, Wretch told Decibel:
“On February 28 Muskeg Charnel is set to release part four of their seven-part series on human decomposition entitled Livor Mortis. The band is honored to return to unleash this maggoty slab of blackfuneraldeathdoommetal on the mighty Horror Pain Gore Death Productions!”
