Song Review: 3WAY – Mm-hmm

Rookies 3WAY Project have rebranded to 3WAY, which somehow seems even more provocative as a group name. Confusingly, the group is actually comprised of nine members, but I guess 9WAY doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. In any case, nine is divisible by three so I’m sure there’s some meaning there.

I worry whenever I see a new song title that’s also an onomatopea. This tends to point toward repetitive, monotonous hooks. “Mm-hmm” isn’t exactly a galvanizing expression, but the track is a bit more dynamic than I expected. The beat has a nice bounce that incorporates retro synths into its sharp percussion. And while the hook is every bit as vacuous as I feared, the blend of vocal and rap on the verses works pretty well. It’s nice to hear more variety in flow, with verse two especially effective. I enjoy the way the song leans back into its chorus, though I wish there was a greater sense of ambition at the song’s center. Sadly, Mm-hmm ends on a clunker, with loud chants taking precedence over more creative choices.
