A few months ago, (G)I-DLE previewed their first English-language EP with I Do — a synthy, atmospheric slow burn that worked well for the group. That sound didn’t turn out to be an indication of where the EP would go, as (G)I-DLE explores a multitude of genres. The dancefloor drive of I Want That is another new avenue for them, though it’s not nearly as successful.
With this song, I feel like some stakeholder saw the success of LE SSERAFIM’s Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard’s Wife and decided to see if (G)I-DLE could leverage the same goodwill from 90’s deep house beats. The production thumps, hitting us with plenty of texture right from the start. You can practically feel the percussion in your chest.
However, the producers have forgotten to drape an engaging song over this beat. Apart from a dramatic pre-chorus and bridge, the majority of I Want That sees the girls reciting their desires in a spoken-word delivery that could be so much more interesting. The song reminds me of Britney’s Work Bitch without the sense of humor, which positions it in an awkward place that doesn’t quite work. A stronger chorus could have offset the verses in a fun way, but I Want That‘s centerpiece turns out to be its weakest moment.
