As Top Media’s first girl group, Odd Youth have their own path to pave. That path has been rocky so far — at least musically. Their output has trended toward the garish, aiming for quirky but more often landing closer to cloying. It’s nice to see a young group experiment with sounds. However, I’d prefer if those sounds were at least somewhat pleasant to the ear.
If you enjoy the sound of a strangled chicken set to a beat, have I got the track for you! I Like You‘s fitful arrangement melds brittle production with found sounds and plenty of hiccupping brass. It’s an acquired taste for sure, and provides a challenging soundscape for the girls to work with. Odd Youth are often forced to resort to chirpy sing-talk, exclaiming “I like you and you like me” over that aforementioned dying chicken. This is punctuated by a dull ping on the side of a metal pot. It’s all very cartoonish. I half expected Porky the Pig to appear at the end of the video bellowing “That’s all Folks!“.
I Like You is rhythmically interesting, offering a herky jerky flow that sounds as if a couple robots were attempting to fashion what they considered “dance.” The sound is definitely not for me, but I appreciate its willingness to think outside the box. I’m sure there will be a handful of listeners that absolutely eat this up. If nothing else, I’m very happy for them!
