New girl group VVS have dropped two pre-releases, both of which have landed with a dull thud on this blog. Now, it’s time for their official debut. Given its predecessors, D.I.M.M doesn’t have big expectations to live up to. This is to its benefit, as the song is not particularly good.
The best thing I can say about D.I.M.M is that it dispenses with the cheesy gimmicks that made both Tea and Purrfect so irritating. Instead, the song attempts to paint VVS as hardcore rappers. From its undulous trap-meets-electro production to the cringey “I got them diamonds in my mouth” chorus and silly cursing, D.I.M.M is highly confrontational and utterly joyless. It’s not that idol groups can’t build their sound around hip-hop. Many successfully have in the past. But a song like this feels like it’s trying so hard to convince its audience of something we know this industry doesn’t possess. Hip-hop thrives on lived experience and authenticity. In comparison, D.I.M.M comes across as parody.
And more than anything, this song just isn’t fun to listen to. There’s an anger laced throughout the entire track, and not in a clever, cathartic way that invites you to join in on the vibe. It’s just an airing of grievances painted with bad posturing.
