Track Premiere: Anthrodynia – “Engulfed in Grief”

We’ve got some fresh rot from the Great White North. Edmonton, Alberta duo Derek Orthner (guitars/vocals/synth/effects) and Durell Smith (drums/bass) have combined to form doomy death metal duo Anthrodynia, and we’re offering up a new track, “Engulfed in Grief,” from their debut full-length Unspeakable Horrors Emanating From Within. The eight-minute-plus track is a clever homage to a certain iconic Boston sludge/doom band and lands sonically with impressive weight and attendant foul stench. It’s a gloomy trudge down a depressing musical path with gut-emptying vocals and riffs that unfurl in slow motion.

Unspeakable Horrors Emanating From Within was recorded, mixed and produced by Orthner. It was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. It’s set to be issued on CD, LP and digitally on August 15 via Nameless Grave Records. Preorders are now live at the Nameless Grave Records webshop here and Bandcamp here.

Derek Orthner had this to say about the new track:

“This is a not-so-subtle homage to the band Grief, as we were trying to tap into that dismal sludge sound for the first half of this song. The lyrics deal with how brutal the grieving process can be, as it can completely drain one’s motivation, and lead to a bleak existence. Poor coping mechanisms become self sabotage, especially in the case of substance abuse. This was a very cathartic song to write, personally speaking, and felt appropriate for the heaviness of the music. The layering of lead guitar harmonies in the final part of the song really digs into those early-’90s death/doom influences, and I like how it came out.”
