The picture-perfect facade is now equalled by its interiors — a match for its sought-after setting in Sydney’s inner east.
The architects restored the front of the house with new porch tiles and paint.
When the owners of this Paddington terrace purchased the home 13 years ago, the property had already been renovated to highlight rear views across Trumper Park and Sydney Harbour.
What was lacking was style, and the overall flow of the spaces to support the young family’s lifestyle. ‘The front entry living space was quite long and the layout a bit confusing,’ says Victoria D’Alisa, co-director at Porebski Architects.
The owners engaged Porebski Architects to refresh the interiors, paying particular attention to the planning of the entry living space.
With the addition of a small joinery unit, the architects created a small ‘foyer’ to enhance the sense of arrival, before the more defined living area.
A feature joinery wall joinery unit with a gas fireplace acts as the living room focal point, with matching timber veneer detailed joinery concealing storage under the stairs opposite.
A wider ‘amphitheatre style’ staircase follows (‘It makes the stairs feel less confronting,’ says Victoria), leading down to the double-height kitchen and dining room, which frames the courtyard and view beyond.
The main bedroom upstairs was also reconfigured to better embrace this enviable outlook.
The client’s teenage daughter occupies the very top attic level, featuring its own en suite and study.
Victoria’s favourite element of the project is the attention to detail shown in the selection of elegant fixtures, including a curvaceous brass handrail that runs down the stairs to the kitchen.
