Active since 2021, Hebephrenique, is an Australian blackened post-metal outfit featuring the duo of Jack Greenhill (guitars/bass/keyboards) and Kris Wolf (vocals) who seem bent on exploring themes of madness—both musical and lyrical. The pair’s debut full-length, Decathexis, is a manic, at times dissonant and atonal, musical assault that may seem like total chaos, but is actually quite meticulously written, arranged and performed. Guest drummer Leo Graae holds the insanity together with incredible precision and dexterity, offering Hebephrenique’s material a solid foundation for the off-the-rails sonic explorations. The tracks flow from beautiful to horrifying seamlessly.
Decathexis was recorded by Greenhill, along with Brendan Auld, who also did the mixing. It was mastered by Brad Boatright. It will be released on vinyl, CD and digitally via Gutter Prince Cabal and Brilliant Emperor on August 23 and can be preordered here (CD) and here (vinyl).
The band had this to say about its debut:
“With Decathexis, we wanted to create a blistering sonic assault that claws through the psyche, an immersive descent into the fractured architecture of our own minds. The music is ferociously chaotic yet meticulously structured, a relentless exploration of psychological disintegration, a maelstrom of blast-beaten catharsis, dissonant riff architecture, and vehement vocal psychosis.
Decathexis, the pathological severing of emotional investment, isn’t just a title for us, it’s also a manifesto. Each track peels back layers of inner dialogue, exposing the raw neurochemical violence of derealization, emotional blunting, and cognitive fragmentation. Through lurching time signatures, oppressive textures, and atmospheres steeped in dread, I tried to translate the language of clinical detachment into sound.”
