Interior design practice Studio Isaza was given almost complete freedom to thoughtfully refresh this Broken Head home.
The all-timber cottage was already charming, but in need of some love to enhance its beauty, liveability, and rainforest outlook.
The client’s love of mid-century furniture, colour, photography, and music set the tone for the renovation.
Studio Isaza leaned into those cues, adding a hint of quirk and nostalgia, while keeping it calm and contemporary.
‘I was influenced by mid-century design with its linear elements, colour palette, and focus on timber joinery,’ says Studio Isaza founder Jana Isaza-Smith.
‘I wanted the space to feel masculine whilst at the same time bringing a sense of softness that was missing before.’
Worn carpet and tiles were removed in favour of blonde timber floors that bounce light around the space, which is shaded by lush trees outside.
The kitchen was rebuilt to incorporate more storage, and the bathroom reconfigured to allow for a generous shower.
Colourful mid-century inspired tiles offer a playful yet elevated element, paired with stainless steel benchtops, and spotted gum joinery that ties in with the timber-panelled walls.
The pared back cottage is now a delight to inhabit, staying true to both its origins and the client’s style.
‘The new alterations sit comfortably within the original timber cottage, embracing the home’s nature, rather than resisting it,’ says Jana.
‘The stainless steel with butter yellow tiles and spotted gum joinery feels especially good. I’m most proud that the updates add quiet sophistication, without losing the cottage’s charm and cosy spirit.’
