I don’t have the hard numbers to back it up, but compared to groups their age it feels like the 2PM members have the most prolific string of solo releases. The guys continuously release material in both Korea and Japan, and even if many of these songs fail to register with me in a big way I must respect the hustle.
This June, Jang Wooyoung released his Simple Dance — a slinky midtempo that came and went with little fanfare. In comparison, new single Think Too Much might as well be called “Slightly More Complex Dance.” The energy is ramped up, the hooks are sharper and the whole package is much more fun. There’s a slight new jack swing pulse to the percussion, though it’s incorporated into a more straightforward dance beat. Rapper Damini adds a contrasting tone that gives the track more pep and there are a few melodies (especially the pre-chorus) that stick out in a great way.
Ultimately, Think Too Much is more “solid” than “spectacular” and doesn’t do much to stand out from the pack, but it’s a fine entry in K-pop’s robust “retro concept” oeuvre.
