It should go without saying (but we’re gonna) that the U.K.’s death doom institution Paradise Lost is a longtime favorite at dBHQ. Hell, we even wrote the book on them. Over nearly four decades, the band has amassed a discography that displays both a dedication to their craft as well as a courage to explore spaces others would shun. Their upcoming album, Ascension—their 17th overall under the Paradise Lost banner—shows no signs of slowing down in the quality control department and demonstrates album of the year potential. So, of all places, why did vocalist Nick Holmes end up in the neon lights of the Kill Screen arcade?
For those of you who haven’t yet deleted your Twitter account, Holmes still regularly posts about his interests: music, horror movies and, you guessed it, video games. Though on our radar at the very beginning of gaming’s most extremely extreme column in 2022, it’s been five long years since the somber songsmiths’ previous offering, Obsidian. Patiently the co-nerds sat in wait, unsure of how the vocalist would take to a conversation about video games. To our sheer delight, the face of “the most miserable band in the world” was all smiles when it came time to answer our questions, sharing a history with the medium that is surprisingly intertwined with multiple members of the band. With their latest masterpiece just two days away from blasting through your speakers, we happily tune out our current draconian times to revel in some much-needed digital escapism.
Ascension is out September 19 via Nuclear Blast and can be pre-ordered here.
