Video Premiere: After Earth – “Skinwalker”

Easily one of the most entertaining videos we’ve seen in ages, Swedish melodic death metal outfit After Earth aren’t afraid to have a little fun with their new track, “Skinwalker.” The basic premise is a young man (one of the guitarists) wakes up, heads to work and as his day proceeds he transforms into a savage killing machine, dispensing with four unsuspecting victims (his bandmates) in increasingly horrifying ways. Much blood is shed, and one poor guy gets his organs chewed on. The video (made by Julia Rydstedt) is actually pretty funny, and the track itself is a thundering rampager with all the necessary Swedish DM accoutrements.

“Skinwalker” appears on After Earth’s second full-length, Dark Night of the Soul which was produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Robert Marcko at Obsidian Recording Studios in Sweden. It’s set to be released independently by the band on September 26. You can find all the preorder and presave links here or go to After Earth’s Bandcamp page here.

The band offered this description of the new track and video:

“‘Skinwalker’ is about a darker kind of transformation. The Navajo legend that inspired this song is about witches who through dark deeds gain the ability to take on the form of an animal to perform their malevolent will. They don’t see what they’re doing as something bad or evil, instead it’s just a new form of power, even though from our perspective what they’re doing is horrifying.

The song is both heavy and melodic, perfectly suiting the theme of the legend and the transformation itself. ‘Skinwalker,’ unlike many of our other songs, is not meant to be inspiring—instead it plays with the thought of giving in to your darkest desires. This is also reflected in our music video for this song, which is our modern take on this legend.”
