New Jersey’s Disintegration Annex popped up just a few months ago, experimenting with noise, the darker side of ambient and even a few extreme metal influences. They released a two-track single and began working on a full-length, but new ideas quickly formed. Carving Arrows From Idols is a three-song EP from Disintegration Annex and you can hear it now.
What makes Carving Arrows From Idols so impressive is how much is going on while maintaining a cohesive sound. There’s a pulsing core of noise with a layer of shimmer on top, the opening track feeling particularly percussive. On that same track, project creator Greg Kennelty incorporates buried, screamed vocals that add to the tense energy. Track two, “Overloaded,” works in a heavier emphasis on droning noise, which is again increasd on EP closer “Disruptive Thanatophobia.”
Carving Arrows From Idols feels alive, not unlike one’s anxious internal or overstimulated monologue. When speaking about the EP, Kennelty explains its origins in a more detailed way:
“Carving Arrows From Idols is a three-track EP that deals with separate facets of anxiety and fear – weaponization of religious beliefs, sensory overload during particularly bad mental health days, and the fear of death being a disruptive force in everyday life. Carving Arrows From Idols was created during the writing sessions for the upcoming debut Disintegration Annex full-length, but these tracks ultimately felt like one cohesive unit that would be better served as a standalone release. Enjoy!”
