Where they from?
International. How about that World Series, huh? I literally fell asleep like a good middle-aged adult during the 9th inning of Game 7 only to be shockingly awakened by that Will Smith home run in extra innings. Wow, imagine making the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars and winning a World Series all in one lifetime.
Why the hype?
From the ashes of Gridlink, easily the most influential grindcore band of the past decade if not all time, arises Barren Path! BP is essentially the final lineup of Gridlink but with Mitch Luna from Maruta/Shock Withdrawal filling in on vocals. As such, this is yet another Takafumi/Bryan Fajardo blasterpiece, with all the twists, turns and unbelievably frenetic blasturbation one can handle in a sub 15-minute offering. The guitarwork has it’s trademark inflections of shimmering melodicism but there is also a couple of moments of added dissonance that only adds to an otherwise lethal arsenal of grindcore.
Latest Release?
Grieving, Willowtip. Who in their right mind would release an album on Halloween? Well, when you’re the grindcore version of Crosby, Still, Nash and Whoever, it really does not matter. My favorite track here is ‘Lunar Tear’ with it’s aforementioned twists and churns but also the always idiosyncratic guitar melodies that both make me feel like a knight and that I’m flying through space. What a great combination. One teaspoon of this is enough for world peace.
