Greetings, Decibel readers!
Lots of great noise to enjoy today, especially if you like weird, angular death metal. Or if you love Lamp of Murmuur as much as I do, that works too.

Fimbul Winter – What Once Was
A gathering of three alumni from Amon Amarth‘s early days (which includes Fredrik from A Canorous Quartet). Although there’s distinct echoes from the Golden Hall on here, the band’s sound overall resembles a conglomeration of muscular, melodic Swedish death metal. Draw your swords!

Lamp of Murmuur – The Dreaming Prince in Ecstasy
Lamp of Murmuur just keeps getting better and better. After the cold and grim storms of Immortal-worship of Saturnian Bloodstorm, the mysterious artist known as “M.” has returned, building on that album’s achievements while reincorporating elements from his earlier work. What results is a work of black metal high drama, a sound that’s epic and towering but still retains its raw and unpolished edge. In this case, the production really carries the music to glory, being just clear enough to convey the sonic message without diluting its power.

Moral Implant – Delusion
Brutal, cutting and ferocious death metal. There’s something distinct and unpredictable about this release, exactly what the band was going for. It’s a sound that hits you as recognizably “death metal” but doesn’t quite sound like anyone else. A hard thing to accomplish in 2025.

Strigiform – Aconite
According to Strigiform‘s guitarist: “As one could infer by delving into its sole musical realm, Aconite is a one-way invitation into a rapaciously inner-focused expedition, inside of which is contained the utmost degree of both psychological and emotional vehemence we could possibly muster.” Sounds about right!

VoidCeremony – Abditum
VoidCeremony has become a highly-respected name in death metal circles, and it’s pretty easy to see why when you listen to Abditum. Anyone who holds a special place in their hearts for Cynic, Atheist and later-era Death should crank this.
