Hardcore punk generally reflects the feelings of the time it’s made, a real-time reaction to politics, social events and the general quality of life in the area a band is from. Acknowledging that, it’s easy to see how we got to Hope is a Disease, Paranoia is Salvation, the new split release from metallic hardcore outfits Territory and Withdrawal.
Officially out later this week, Hope is a Disease/Paranoia is Salvation takes the simplistic brutality of metallic hardcore and slathers a layer of darkness on top of it. The first two songs on the split come from Arizona-based Territory. Contributing both the longest and shortest song on Hope is Disease, Territory are equally comfortable with Hatebreed-esque hardcore brawn (“Bent Knee Diplomacy”) and a faster, more blackened approach (“Into the End”).
On the B-side is Withdrawal, who hail from the “furthest reaches of Hell” (Manitoba). Openly influenced by bands like All Out War, 100 Demons and Catharsis, Withdrawal play fast and in your face. There are trace amounts of gnarly psychedelia, particularly in “Another Dead End” and “Thy Deception Crystalline,” taking a comfortable sound and adding a slight twist to it.
You can check out the full split below, as well as purchase the album via Bandcamp.
