Song Review: Cha Eunwoo (Astro) – Sweet Papaya

Cha Eunwoo’s recently released Saturday Preacher was the rare song review on this blog that garnered absolutely no engagement (ie: comments) from readers. That tells me something, and it’s a contrast I’ve long suspected: Cha Eunwoo the actor and variety star? Mega success. Cha Eunwoo the solo singer? Pleasant but uncompelling.

It also tells me that I should keep this review for follow-up track Sweet Papaya pretty short. And really, that’s about all the song calls for. Saturday Preacher was a fun burst of faceless disco energy. Sweet Papaya is similarly upbeat yet feels a little less cool. It’s a K-pop dance track for dads who tuck their shirts into their blue jeans. It’s completely serviceable but also relentlessly fuddy duddy. In some ways, “nice” is the worst thing a pop song can be. Sweet Papaya elicits no bad reaction but this comes at the expense of any reaction at all. The sing-talk during the bridge is mildly amusing, but I don’t buy the energy behind the “come and get it” refrain. It’s all just so toothless.
