You’re going to want a joint on hand before you listen to Cosmic Censor, the new album from Italian stoner rock/trad heavy metal outfit Indigosaur. Though they’ve been a live band for nearly a decade, Cosmic Censor is Indigosaur’s first recorded outing and it’s steeped in the tradition of retro hard rock and early NWOBHM, complete with a smattering of ’90s stoner ephemera.
The band are more than happy to break down their sound and influences.
“Cosmic Censor is our tribute to the darkest hues of ‘70s hard rock, the steely taste of the NWOBHM and the narcotic atmospheres of stoner/doom,” Indigosaur tell Decibel. “Nine tracks of vigorous, lysergic heavy rock, some direct and relentless, others following a more winding path. Vocal melodies are entwined with granitic riffs; the rhythm section propels the songs through dynamic instrumental openings and moments of contemplation. The lyrics delve into pessimistic reflections on the human condition, metaphorical descriptions of astronomical phenomena and their link to mythology. The Cosmic Censor is the ravenous gravitational abomination from which nothing can escape.”
