Song Review: Choi Sungyun (Golden Child’s Y) – Aurora

Just yesterday, I wrote about a solo track from Infinite’s Sungyeol but did so mainly out of loyalty. The song itself did very little for me. Flash forward twenty four hours and we’re in the exact same boat. This time, it’s the solo debut (!) from one of Golden Child’s main vocalists, Choi Sungyun — otherwise known under the moniker Y. Along with most of the group’s members, Sungyun left the sinking ship that is Woollim Entertainment and has now signed with smaller agency Oak Village.

For a handful of years, Golden Child were my ultimate group active in K-pop. I still think they’re incredibly underrated and boast the strongest discography of their generation. I love Sungyun’s voice, especially when paired with the complimentary (yet contrasting) tone of bandmate Joochan. But as always, I’m a song person. If the music itself isn’t working for me, no amount of personal bias will pull it over the line. Sungyun performs Aurora beautifully and it’s wonderful to hear him back in this realm, but the track itself is quite dull and generic. There’s nothing here I haven’t heard a million times before. It follows the tried-and-true template established by so many idols-turned-soloists. I don’t understand why these acts can’t re-emerge with something more interesting and idiosyncratic. Sungyun’s is obvious and demands stronger material.
