Blast Worship: Rotten Sound

Where they from?
Finland. It’s fantasy playoff time and I made it in three out of my five leagues. This might not mean anything to you, dear reader, but let me tell you there is $300 on the line and I’m gonna have a straight chub for the next week and a half. Too bad my starting QB decided to tear his ACL and my tight end is too busy planning his wedding date to catch any meaningful passes. De’Von Achane, save me, you’re my only hope!

Why the hype?
I often throw around terms like ‘legendary’ and ‘standard-bearer’ in this column but if any band has ever earned such accolades, it is Finland’s finest. To me they are the ultimate HM-2 grind band, no one does the buzzsaw quite as ferociously as Rotten Sound. No frills, no nonsense, just straight European razor-grind that can tear the paint off a toolshed. This band has several albums in their discography that are stone-cold classics, my personal favorite being 2005’s bleak masterpiece Exit. If aliens came to Earth and wanted to know what grindcore is, I would show them that album and they would promptly kill us all.

Latest release?
Mass Extinction, out now on Season of the Mist. This EP doesn’t necessarily bring anything new to the Rotten Sound repertoire, but we don’t need it too. It is simply nine minutes of pure punishment featuring hellacious blasts and grinding breakdowns. I bet if Travis Kelce listened to this rather than Life of a Show Girl he would be fantasy MVP for the next couple of weeks. Just a thought.
