Though their music has been very uneven so far, I find ALLDAY PROJECT a pretty exciting addition to the current K-pop landscape. Certain members court controversy, which only adds to their appeal for some fans. For my part, I’m just happy to see another co-ed group becoming successful in K-pop. I wish we had more of them with varying styles and sounds.
Apart from the nursery-rhyme-esque title track Look At Me, the group’s first mini album is strong. The unit tracks are particularly fun. But for some reason, they’ve decided to promote the project’s undisputed nadir with a music video. That reason, I suspect, is that Medusa‘s protagonist is Tarzzan. Love him or hate him, everyone’s talking about him. His rap style is not for me, and Medusa is like aural repellent to these ears. There are very few types of music I outwardly dislike, but this slurred style of hip-hop is not something I would ever choose to listen to.
Because of this, I don’t know that I’m qualified to discern what makes an individual song “good” or “bad” within this sub-genre, but I do know that lyrics like “Never followed trends, trendsеtting my trend” make my eyes glaze over and come across as a kid playing hip-hop dress-up. They could easily be ignored if given an exciting beat that makes your head nod in spite of itself, but Medusa‘s lurching rumble simply feels claustrophobic and depressing to me.
